Anne Moody essays

Anne Moody essays Anne Moody's "Coming of Age in Mississippi" was altogether insightful into the life of an African-American raised in the deep south during the civil rights movement. It gave us a look at what many sacrificed in order to achieve civil rights for all. I believe this book achieved its goal of telling of one woman's struggle for her basic rights in a hostile environment. This book begins with the life of its author. She starts out as basically a slave child on a farm in Mississippi. She tells of her parents lives, how they went to the fields at sun up and came back from them at sundown. She describes her abusive cousin, George Lee, and tells of a few traumatic childhood experiences. She goes on describing where her mother and fathers marital problems began, which leads to their separation and her father moving in with another woman. This is where her hardships begin for her. Throughout her childhood she is a timid, poor little girl who is afraid to even ask her mother questions about what is going on around her. Anne tells of their staple diet, beans and bread, which was just enough to keep her alive. I cannot possibly imagine what it is like to be on the brink of starvation. Although a timid, shy, little girl, Anne does show a spark of intensity through her schoolwork. She is very competitive and driven to do well in school. This is the fuel which will later feed her fire to participate in the Movement. This want for an education is also a rather new trait for black women of her time. She is already a sort of radical as a child and does not even know it yet. As she grows older her mother begins a relationship with a black man from town named Raymond. She talks of her mother being pregnant and her realizing how babies are brought into the world. Anne describes her mother's mood swings and what I see as emotional depression while seeing Raymond and not living with him. Anne, her mother, brother, and sister even...

Definition and Examples of Associative Meaning

Definition and Examples of Associative Meaning In semantics, associative meaning refers to the particular qualities or characteristics beyond the denotative meaning that people commonly think of (correctly or incorrectly) in relation to a word or phrase. Also known as  expressive meaning and stylistic meaning. In Semantics: The Study of Meaning (1974), British linguist Geoffrey Leech introduced the term associative meaning to refer to the various types of meaning that are distinct from denotation (or conceptual meaning): connotative, thematic, social, effective, reflective, and collocative. See Examples and Observations below. Also, see: Conceptual MeaningConnotationFigurative MeaningGlittering GeneralitiesMeaningPolysemyReflected MeaningSemanticsSemantic TransparencyStipulative DefinitionSubtextSynonymy Examples and Observations A good example of a common noun with an almost universal associative meaning is nurse. Most people automatically associate nurse with woman. This unconscious association is so widespread that the term male nurse has had to be coined to counteract its effect.(Sndor Hervey and Ian Higgins, Thinking French Translation: A Course in Translation Method, 2nd ed. Routledge, 2002)Cultural and Personal AssociationsA word can sweep by your ear and by its very sound suggest hidden meanings, preconscious association. Listen to these words: blood, tranquil, democracy. You know what they mean literally but you have associations with those words that are cultural, as well as your own personal associations.(Rita Mae Brown, Starting From Scratch. Bantam, 1988)Pig[W]hen some people hear the word pig they think of a particularly dirty and unhygienic animal. These associations are largely mistaken, at least in comparison with most other farm animals (although their association with various cultural tradi tions and related emotional responses are real enough), so we would probably not include these properties in the connotations of the word. But the associative meaning of a word often has very powerful communicative and argumentative consequences, so it is important to mention this aspect of meaning.(Jerome E. Bickenbach and Jacqueline M. Davies, Good Reasons for Better Arguments: An Introduction to the Skills and Values of Critical Thinking. Broadview Press, 1998) Conceptual Meaning and Associative MeaningWe can . . . make a broad distinction between conceptual meaning and associative meaning. Conceptual meaning covers those basic, essential components of meaning that are conveyed by the literal use of a word. It is the type of meaning that dictionaries are designed to describe. Some of the basic components of a word like needle in English might include thin, sharp, steel instrument. These components would be part of the conceptual meaning of needle. However, different people might have different associations or connotations attached to a word like needle. They might associate it with pain, or illness, or blood, or drugs, or thread, or knitting, or hard to find (especially in a haystack), and these associations may differ from one person to the next. These types of associations are not treated as part of the words conceptual meaning. . . .Poets, songwriters, novelists, literary critics, advertisers, and lovers may all be interested in how word s can evoke certain aspects of associative meaning, but in linguistic semantics, were more concerned with trying to analyze conceptual meaning.(George Yule, The Study of Language, 4th ed. Cambridge University Press, 2010) The Lighter Side of Associative MeaningMichael Bluth: What do you think of when you hear the word, Sudden Valley?George Michael Bluth: Salad dressing, I think. But for some reason, I dont want to eat it.Michael Bluth: Right. But Paradise Gardens?George Michael Bluth: Yeah. Okay, I can see marinating a chicken in that.(Jason Bateman and Michael Cera in Switch Hitter. Arrested Development, 2005)

Hate CrimeAgainst Asian Americans Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Hate CrimeAgainst Asian Americans - Essay Example In the film, both Chin's and Ebens' families believed they were the victims of this hate crime, with Ebens' ascribing his mistakes to the crushing recession of the automotive industry, and Chin's family focusing on the American government's unfair justice system and considering this to be a pan-ethnic Asian American issue. The 1987 Academy Award-nominated documentary of Christine Choy and Renee Tajima shows the episodes leading up to the slay and following the trial's shocking and unexpected verdict. Above a simple regurgitation of the case, it sets out with the query presented by the film's title to illustrate the greater sociological background of the incident. Surveillance and interviews of the conditions of the people employed in the plants and knowledge of the effects of the Japanese automobile industry on Detroit, the documentary challenges to clarify why an incident like this could be surpassed. Conceivably, the most significant touch of the film's plot is that, in spite of the upsetting lack of emotional involvement of Ebens when interviewed, the filmmakers draw connections between Vincent's and Ronald's histories. Both men moved to Detroit in optimism, hopes of finding better jobs, managed to "fit in," and however intersected in a misfortune ("Who Killed Vincent Chin"). The Tragic Death of an Asian American: It was on June 19, 1982 in Detroit when two jobless autoworkers, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz, clubbed Chin to death, they neither knew him nor cared who he was as a person. It did not matter that he was a Chinese American, rather than Japanese or even Japanese American. As far as they were concerned, they regarded Chin as some "species" of Asian who had robbed them of their livelihood, and they were determined to take revenge by depriving him of his life (Wei). In 1982, Detroit's automotive business was in the middle of a financial crisis, losing the rivalry for customers to Japanese automakers who were manufacturing better-quality cars for the American market. Rather than condemn the American automakers for their failure to compete successfully, people blamed the Japanese people, triggering widespread anti-Japanese feeling (Wei). In this economic rivalry, Eben and Nitz had become two of the "losers" and were set wandering in American society. On the contrary, Chin was happily employed, working as a draftsman at a local engineering firm. Furthermore, he was a young man in the town celebrating his bachelor's party, a young man with his whole life ahead of him. It can only be explained as a fit of racial disgust deepened by envy when Ebens and Nitz hunted Chin down and murdered him for their personal dilemma (Wei). The similarly sad part of this execution was how Vincent's murderers were handled by the criminal justice system. Ebens and Nitz pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to 3 years probation, fined $3,780 and obliged to pay $780 in court expenses (Wei). In a second trial, the Justice Department convicted Ebens with the violation of Vincent's civil rights and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Nitz was acquitted. However, due to a technicality, new trial was ordered by a federal appeals court. At this retrial, whose jury consisted almost completely of White blue-collar men, both Ebens and Nitz were

An Example of Academic Writing Essay

An Example of Academic Writing EssayAs someone who graduated from college recently, one thing I've noticed is how hard it is to write an example of academic writing essay. I even had trouble when I started out by making up examples of essays that I'd read online.I have to admit that when I was first trying to write my own academic essay, I made the mistake of just writing whatever I read. This would normally be a strong point for many people, especially those that aren't very good at it. But when you're attempting to write a writing sample for an entire class, it can be very frustrating. One way to get out of this was to create a 'fake' example of writing that I could put in my essay. This helped a lot, but not when I started my writing in college. The issue with that was that it was obvious that they weren't attempting to write like that. The real example of academic writing essay has to come from actual students that you meet while you're writing. You'll notice that almost all of the m are extremely serious and extremely intelligent. So I decided to see if I could come up with a better way of creating an example of academic writing.I found that I could come up with several different examples of academic writing and use each one as a basis for my own essay. And it actually worked quite well. The interesting thing is that the more examples you come up with, the more it makes sense to you. As you learn more about the style of writing students to use, you'll start to pick up on what each student does to try to get their point across. It's so easy to try to copy something from a few other people, and you don't have to worry about spelling errors. I think it's important to pick a different way of approaching this, but it helps that everyone I talk to is always so intelligent and passionate about their work.
